Car Polish vs Coating Spray: Which One Does Your Car Need?

Walk into any car accessories shop and you'll see polish, wax, sealant and coating sprays side by side. They are not the same thing. Using the right one at the right time saves money and keeps your paint looking new for longer.

What a car polish does

Polish slightly smooths the top layer of the paint. It removes dullness, light swirl marks and oxidation, so the colour looks deeper. Use it when the paint looks faded or has fine marks. An all-in-one car polish and sealant does both jobs in one step: it polishes and then leaves a protective layer behind.

What a coating spray does

A coating spray doesn't correct the paint; it protects it. It adds a slick, glossy layer that helps water bead off and makes dust easier to wipe away. A quick-effect car coating spray is the fastest option: spray, spread with a microfiber cloth, and buff.

Which one should you use?

  • Paint looks dull or has swirl marks: polish first.
  • Paint looks good and you want shine and protection: coating spray.
  • Light scratches that your fingernail doesn't catch: try a scratch removal wax on that spot first.

A simple monthly routine

  1. Wash the car and dry it fully. Never polish a dusty car.
  2. Polish once every 2 to 3 months, or when the paint looks dull.
  3. Apply a coating spray every 3 to 4 weeks after washing.
  4. Finish the tyres with tyre polish and remove dust between washes with a microfiber duster.

Tips for best results

  • Work in the shade on cool paint, never in direct afternoon sun.
  • Use clean microfiber cloths; a dirty cloth leaves new scratches.
  • Work one panel at a time and follow the directions on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

Is car polish the same as car wax?

No. Polish smooths the paint surface to remove dullness and light marks, while wax, sealants and coating sprays add a protective, glossy layer on top.

How often should I use a coating spray on my car?

Every 3 to 4 weeks after a wash is a good routine for daily-driven cars in Indian conditions.

Can I use a coating spray on a bike?

Generally yes on painted surfaces. Test on a small area first and follow the directions on the pack.
