Pet Grooming at Home: A Simple Weekly Routine for Dogs and Cats
Share
You don't need a salon every month to keep your dog or cat clean. A short weekly routine at home keeps the coat healthy, reduces shedding and helps you notice ticks, skin problems or ear issues early.
Brushing: 2 to 3 times a week
Brushing removes loose hair and dirt and spreads natural oils through the coat. A 2-in-1 bath and grooming brush works for both dry brushing and bath time. Brush in the direction of hair growth and be gentle around the belly and legs.
Bathing: every 3 to 4 weeks for most dogs
Over-bathing dries the skin. Use a pet shampoo, lukewarm water, rinse thoroughly and dry well, especially in monsoon. Most cats rarely need a full bath.
Ear check: once a week
Look for redness, a bad smell or dark wax. Clean only the visible part of the ear with a pet ear cleaner such as an ear rinse and a cotton pad. Never push anything deep into the ear canal. If your pet keeps scratching or shaking its head, see a vet.
Fresh water every day
Pets need clean water through the day, especially in Indian summers. An automatic water dispenser keeps water available when you're out.
Play and exercise
Daily play burns energy and reduces chewing and barking. Interactive toys like a light-up dog ball keep dogs busy.
