How to Remove Light Scratches from Your Car at Home (Step-by-Step Guide)
Share
Small scratches from keys, bushes, bags or a careless wash make even a new car look old. The good news: many light scratches only affect the top clear coat, and you can fix them at home without a workshop visit.
Step 1: Check how deep the scratch is
Run your fingernail gently across the scratch. If your nail doesn't catch, the scratch is most likely in the clear coat and can be polished out at home. If your nail catches, or you can see grey primer or bare metal, the scratch has gone through the paint and needs touch-up paint or a body shop.
Step 2: Wash and dry the area
Dust and sand act like sandpaper. Wash the area with car shampoo and water, then dry it fully with a clean microfiber cloth. A soft microfiber car duster is handy for removing loose dust between washes.
Step 3: Apply scratch removal wax
Put a small amount of car scratch removal wax on a soft applicator or cloth. Rub it over the scratch in small circles with light, even pressure for 1 to 2 minutes, then wipe off the residue with a clean microfiber cloth. Repeat 2 or 3 times if the scratch is still visible. Always follow the directions on the pack.
Step 4: Protect and finish
Work in the shade, never on hot paint in direct sunlight. Once the scratch has faded, finish the rest of the car so the shine looks even. For a complete look, dress the tyres with tyre polish and clean the cabin with a portable car vacuum cleaner.
How to prevent new scratches
- Don't wipe a dusty car with a dry cloth; use a duster or wash it first.
- Use two buckets when washing: one with soap, one to rinse the cloth.
- Park away from bushes and tight spots where possible.
- Use a soft curved cleaning brush for wheels and hard-to-reach areas.

How long does it take to remove a light scratch at home?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes per scratch, including washing, applying the wax 2 or 3 times and wiping it off.
Can I use scratch removal wax on a bike?
Generally yes on painted surfaces, but test on a small hidden area first and follow the directions on the pack.
